Important Movie “Food Inc.” This Summer

An important movie is coming out this summer. Along the theme of Michael Pollan’s books, The Omnivore’s Dilemma and The Botany of Desire this movie looks at what really happens to most conventionally packaged and grown food in this country.

There have been several studies that show eating the right foods early in life can have a protective effect later in life.   For example it has been shown that in utero ingesting nutrients that are cancer protective can prevent cancer later in life. When our cell differentiation is at its fastest rate seems to be a time that DNA imprints are formed.   So when we are infants and during the teen years are the fastest rates of cell differentiation. These are the most important times to be eating foods that are wholesome and do not contain large amounts of free radicals such as what is found in vegetable oils. Read the rest of this entry

I’d say that all women that come into our office are aware that it is important to supplement with folic acid before they get pregnant and during pregnancy.  Another research study was just released showing benefits of folic acid in relation to growth in-utero.    However because of the negative research studies about supplementing with folic acid (the synthetic form found in 95% of nutritional supplements) I highly recommend using a supplement with the natural form which is folate. Acupuncture for Pediatrics

Good Morning America ran a story this morning about pediatric acupuncture. They visited my friend Sue Harris’ acupuncture center in Stoughton and with Fae Kontje-Gibbs the attending acupuncturist who also shares an office with me in Cambridge.   Click here for the video.

A couple of new studies were just releases showing that fresh is better.   Green tea – even though still stored in the wrapping and in a package – loses its potency of antioxidant catechins after just 6 months at room temperature!    Another study looked at Extra Virgin Olive Oil and found that even though the olive oil was in a closed container that after several months the antioxidants phytochemical potency was reduced dramatically.

What does this tell us?    That buying all the olive oil when it is on sale may not be the healthiest way to go.  Also check dates on bottles and tea boxes.  Purchase the most recent dates you see on the shelf. Read the rest of this entry
