Shiatsu is a form of therapeutic bodywork based in Traditional Chinese Medicine.  Through  deeply satisfying, whole body sessions, it makes use of the body’s meridian pathways and acupressure points to promote health, balance and a remarkable feeling of well-being!

How can shiatsu help me?

Shiatsu is effective for relieving nagging musculoskeletal issues like aches, pains, tension, stiffness and injuries throughout the entire body, literally from head to toe. Beyond surface conditions such as these, it is also effective as a complementary treatment for specific internal symptoms.

Shiatsu is both relaxing and nourishing, stimulating the body’s own healing abilities.  this type of Asian bodywork is appropriate for and enjoyed by all ages; my clients range from those in utero to those in their mid-eighties.

This type of Asian bodywork is used for prevention as well as relief, as the effects of a shiatsu treatment continue well beyond the session.

Shiatsu Sessions: What to Expect

Setting…Shiatsu sessions are traditionally carried out on a comfortable futon mat with fresh clean sheets and supportive pillows as needed.

Clothing…Yes, you remain fully clothed through the entire session.  Ideal dress includes loose, comfortable clothing which allows for easy mobility, such as sweatpants and a long sleeve shirt. Clean socks are also appreciated.

A Session includes the following:

Assessment – Joy uses pulse, abdominal and tongue assessments in addition to gathering  information from speaking with you. Once she begins practicing the bodywork, she will gain an even more thorough understanding of your body.

Treatment – Shiatsu is the foundation of Joy’s work, though she is also trained in Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki.  She may incorporate techniques from these two practices if they are pertinent to the session and appropriate for your body. Treatments are deeply therapeutic and incredibly relaxing.

Reflection/Discussion – At the close of the treatment, you’ll discuss findings from both the assessment and the bodywork to determine the best approaches for your needs.  These might include dietary guidance, self-treatment techniques, lifestyle changes or referrals to other caregivers.

Follow-Up – Joy will contact you via e-mail to share any important notes from your session, including the information and contacts discussed during the reflection.

How long are shiatsu sessions?

Shiatsu sessions are generally one hour in length, particularly if you want to include all of the components listed above. Shorter sessions are available upon request.

If you are someone who does not prefer full body sessions, Joy also offers half hour and 45 minute session for feet only or a combination of hands and feet. The entire body will benefit from working with just these appendages due to the large amount of nerve endings located within them.
